"A’nee was only 30 years old, her life cruelly cut short in a horrific act of violence," reads a GoFundMe launched by members of DC Safe Haven, a trans-led organization seeking to support A'nee's family.
A'nee was violently assaulted and then left in the roadway on the 900 block of U Street, where she was struck by a passing vehicle as she reeled from the initial attack on Saturday, Oct. 14.
Following her death, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined cause was multiple blunt force injuries. A'nee's death was ruled a homicide.
According to the campaign, A'nee is the 20th transgender or gender-nonconforming person to die by violence this year.
"We are calling on you to stand with us in solidarity against transphobia and violence," DC Safe Haven said. "Your donation, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in our fight for justice for A’nee and in laying her to rest. Please share this campaign and donate if you can."
DC Safe Haven is asking the community to come to Trans Day of Remembrance on Nov. 17, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. This year's theme is "Walk in Our Shoes," which the group says is a "reminder that an injustice to one transgender person is an injustice to us all."
